Gua 5 belongs to the center rather than the eight directional trigrams, so Life Gua systems commonly map it to another number.
The Later Heaven Ba Gua places five at the center. The eight surrounding positions correspond to trigrams and compass directions, but the center does not have a separate directional trigram in the same way.
Five is associated with the center and the earth element. Because the center is not a compass direction, personal Gua systems often translate a Gua 5 result to one of the surrounding trigrams before assigning favorable directions.
This is a common convention rather than a universal rule. If you study with a particular teacher or lineage, follow the method they specify and note the difference.

Some systems retain Gua 5 as an intermediate value, some map it directly, and others use a different year boundary. Births near early February are especially likely to produce different results.

Gua 5 is associated with the center in the Later Heaven arrangement and does not have its own directional trigram. A common convention maps male births to Kun 2 and female births to Gen 8.
